Preparing Your Soil for Planting

The changing of the seasons and warmer weather means that finally we can again venture outdoors.

Planting a garden of any kind is exciting.  Whether your focus is on beauty or practicality, preparing your soil for the best results begins with some basic tips. Healthy dirt, after all, is the essential component for good growth.

Before you start to deal with the dirt itself, other elements must be removed.  Debris such as glass particles and rocks can get in the way of your garden growing properly.  Weeds have roots that will rob your plants of the moisture and nutrients they need.  Cleaning all of these elements out of the garden’s soil should be done carefully and thoroughly.

Preparing the soil for its optimum condition is the next step.  One way to improve your soil is to use compost.  If you have prepared compost in advance, you can easily add it to your new garden.  A second method is to use a ready-made product which can be found in any home and garden supply store, and many department stores.  If your goal is a completely green garden, an organic product is a good choice.  These products will increase the overall quality of your garden soil, and give the plants a healthier environment in which to grow.

A healthy garden needs to be aerated.  Roots must have plenty of room in order to grow properly, and to absorb enough water for proper growth.  Depending upon the size of the garden, this can be done by hand with hand-held tools, or with a larger piece of equipment such as a rototiller.

For the best results, gardens should be moisturized prior to planting.  When there is enough water in the soil, it gives the seeds or roots the chance to stabilize and start growing.  Unless the product package specifies otherwise, it is not necessary to completely saturate the ground.  A moist, but not saturated, soil environment is best for planting.

After soil preparation and planting, don’t forget other annual outdoor tasks. Now is the time to bring the gas barbecue grill outside. I’s almost time for some grill parties surrounded by the beautiful flowers and vegetables of your garden.[ad#Mantis Tiller Banner]
