Garden Decking is the Perfect Solution for a Difficult Garden

Garden decking, apart from being the perfect solution to a difficult garden with uneven surfaces, slopes and wet areas, can provide a place full of peace and tranquility. If done well, it can be a place of such serenity and a place for relaxing, entertaining friends or celebrating special events. Garden decks can also be built in any shape or size and the limits can be measured only by your budget.

A garden deck is a wooden platform that is built above the ground and can be attached directly to the home or as a structure standing by itself. There’s much less work involved when the deck is attached to the walls of a home since it will get much of its structural support from the house itself. Those who prefer to build a free standing deck will have to go into a little more trouble, due to the need for concrete work and extra digging. This however does not stop most home owners from having a free standing deck built, because this type of deck can be placed anywhere in the garden and also does not involve any structural work on the existing walls of the house.

Once a home owner has decided on the type of deck he wants, he can get on with the process of designing with the help of an architect. Before that however, he will have to get the necessary approval and building permits to carry on with the construction work. Another thing to consider when building the deck is making it weatherproof no matter the climate of the place you live in. Take that little extra time to seal the deck and make it weatherproof, it will mean a lot less trouble in the future when all you have to do is make sure the wood remain in good condition.

Garden decking is not without its problems, with the main complaint being the growth of grass and weeds through the spaces in the wooden boards. The best way to prevent this is by clearing all vegetation from the area and also by compacting and leveling the ground. Just like everything else, proper maintenance is the key to retaining its beauty and in order to do so, there are a few guidelines that should be followed:
• Use water repellant on the boards once a year and replace any broken or damaged boards.
• Always use rubber mats to place the furniture in order to minimize damage.
• Use a pressure hose to remove dirt that is stuck between the boards and always keep the deck clean and free of dust and dirt.
• Make sure the nuts and bolts are tightened to prevent the boards from coming apart.
• Add a few pots of plants and flowers to make the deck look more pleasing.

There was a time when patios were in fashion and everyone was clamoring to have one built in their garden. The patio craze is now fading and is being replaced by the latest garden fad which is the garden deck. By making sure you build it right, you can enjoy many pleasant evenings relaxing in the cool comfort of your garden deck.
